KEN SHORES | G. LEWIS CLEVENGER December 2, 2008 - January 17, 2009
I grew up in a mid-century ranch house and that aesthetic is imprinted in my sensibilities. I have interpreted and translated these thoughts into grid-based abstraction allowing the colors and compositions to shift and change several times as I build the painting. There are layers of color, some are scraped away as more layers are added - a process which distills my personal observations and memories of urban life into color and tone. G. Lewis Clevenger Being a potter was not Shores goal; he wanted to create sculpture and wanted to use clay. His search for a sculptural approach that matched the materiality of clay while engaging history led him to the work of Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi. Here, Shores found a model for biomorphic form, sculptural hand-built structures and an unapologetic engagement with surface decoration. Namita Gaupta Wiggers, Museum of Contemporary Craft
